I complete a BA Fine Art degree at the University of Pretoria in 1990, majoring in sculpture. The following year, instead of enrolling for the compulsory National Army Service, I set off on a 6-month study expedition of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania. Amidst engine trouble and malaria, the whole exploration turns out to be life-changing for me. I am drawn to the 'floating' symbols and images that I see painted on buildings and make-shift advertising boards throughout the region.
